Student Conference

On June 4th, PHANYC's Student Committee sponsored its third Annual Student Conference at the CUNY Graduate Center. The conference had 22 presenters from eight universities in the area. Over 100 people attended the conference, including students, faculty, and members of the NYC public health community, which was more than double the attendance and presenters of its first annual conference.
Topics presented at the conference ranged from health disparities, gender, sexuality and reproductive health, physical activity and nutrition, defining and dealing with chronic disease and addiction, and policy, work and environmental interventions to promote health.

Annual Dinner and Awards Ceremony

On May 29th, PHANYC celebrated its 2008 Annual Dinner and Awards Ceremony at the Jing Fong restaurant in Chinatown, NY. Over 500 individuals participated in the lively reception, dinner and awards ceremony where we honored our colleagues, awardees and public health profession, which was more than double the number of attendees in 2007.
PHANYC was proud to present its 2008 Haven Emerson Award of lifetime achievement to James Imperato, MD, MPH&TM, Distinguished Service Professor and Chair of the Department of Preventive Medicine Community Health, Director of Master of Public Health Program at SUNY Downstate for his outstanding leadership in and contributions to public health in New York City.
In addition, PHANYC was pleased to present its second Allan Rosenfield Award for Public Health and Social Justice in honor of our colleague, Allan Rosenfield, the Dean of the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University. The Allan Rosenfield Award recognizes public health professionals who have made significant contributions to improving public health by promoting social justice in New York. The Award calls attention to the deep connections between population health and social justice and celebrates individuals who have nurtured this public health tradition.
The 2008 Allan Rosenfield Award for Public Health and Social Justice is awarded to Pamela Brier, MPH, President and Chief Executive Officer of Maimonides Medical Center for her outstanding accomplishments in improving public health by promoting social justice in New York City.
Other 2008 awardees included:
- Yvonne Graham, MPH, Deputy Brooklyn Borough President and posthumously Donald Gemson, MD, MPH, Associate Clinical Director of Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health, shared the Special Merit Award
- NYC Councilmember (District 9) Inez Dickens was awarded the Legislator of the Year Award
- Monica Sweeney, MD, MPH, Assistant Commissioner of the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene Bureau of HIV/AIDS Prevention and Control received the Special Merit Award.
- Gotham Gazette received the Media Award
- Public Health Community Awards were given to: Alianza Dominicana, Inc., Bronx Youth as Partners in Community-Based Participatory Research, Preventive Intervention Research Center for Child Health at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Korean Community Services of Metropolitan New York, New York City Nurse-Family Partnership, including:
- New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, Bureau of Maternal, Infant and Reproductive Health for administrating the NFP;
- Harlem Hospital Center, HHC as participating agency;
- Public Health Solutions as participating agency;
- Richmond Home Need Services, Inc, as participating agency;
- SCO Family of Service as participating agency;
- The Brooklyn Hospital Center-NFP as participating agency;
- Visiting Nurse Service of New York as participating agency.
- Goldmann Student Paper Awards were given to Karen Flórez, and Yujim Lin (2nd place)

Combatting Diabetes & Obesity in Bronx
Lehman College, Bronx
PHANYC, the Campaign for Bronx Health and the New York City Food and Fitness Partnership held a Town Forum for Bronx residents and those concerned with their health to share their thoughts and talk with others about how to combat diabetes and obesity in their community. This open forum showcased extensive information on access to food and availability of recreation in the Bronx, and engaged people in discussion and planning.

Examination: Pros and Cons
PHANYC presented an educational program on the history and implications of the new Certification in Public Health Examination at the Brooklyn College Graduate Center for Worker Education (Manhattan campus). Speakers explored the pros and cons of the examination for and becoming a certified public health professional.
